Evaluation: The Modern Era
By Beverly Settle, K-12 art teacher: Brookfield Central School

I set up a video conference with the Smithsonian Art Museum to tour “The Modern Era” on March 29, 2006. The class I used for this virtual tour was a group of 10 sixth graders. First I emailed Colleen Brown at BrownC@saam.si.edu. The next step was to set up a time to do a connection test. I forwarded the email to the technology coordinator to confirm that the test could be done at that time. There is a lot of back and forth email communication. We also exchanged phone numbers incase direct contact was necessary.
Here are my observations in evaluation of this experience.

Positive Factors
  • Tour takes place right in the classroom
  • No transportation cost or scheduling
  • No chaperones or parent permission slips
  • Enhances and reinforces content
  • Stimulates student interest
  • Students interact with a docent
  • Artwork is explained and discussed

Negative Factors

  • Must arrange for set up and return of equipment
  • Student interaction depends on the individual docent
  • No pre-visit materials supplied
  • Vocabulary above sixth grade level
  • Could have covered more artwork with less detail at this age level.
  • Some artwork is 3-dimensional and hard to see in slide format
